Author and Founder of Self-Care Is The New Health-Care®, Melissa holds a RYT500 from Asheville Yoga Center with additional certifications in Aerial Yoga, Children’s Yoga, and Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching.
Melissa discovered yoga while in college completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It wasn’t until many years later after she became a mother, that she was reminded of the importance of a daily yoga practice. After suffering from anxiety and being diagnosed with depression, Melissa turned to yoga and meditation for relief. Struggling with the stress of being a new mom, she began noticing the benefits that a daily practice had on her mood, energy levels, and sleep patterns. At first, it felt selfish to carve out the time to practice, but soon Melissa observed that her self-care routine rippled out to her family and work. Not only was she enjoying the positive effects of a daily yoga and meditation practice, but she was able to show up better for those that depended on her.
Yoga became such a huge part of her self-care routine that Melissa wanted to share the benefits with others, so she became certified to teach under the guidance of Shala Worsley, Sierra Hollister, Doug Keller, Joe Taft, Kino Macgregor, and Kimberley Puryear. She continues to learn and evolve her yoga practice with a mindset of always being a student. Additionally, her interests expanded into the martial arts, and Melissa holds the rank of 1st-Dan Black Belt, certified through the World Taekwondo Headquarters, Kukkiwon. Her practice embraces the strength of a warrior spirit blended with the flowing grace of mindful awareness.
Melissa’s teaching style emphasizes both the importance of the subtle body and the power of physical movement in yoga. She guides her students to uncover and release stuck emotions and remove barriers, enabling body, mind, and spirit to build strength, seek alignment, find balance, and listen to intuition. She loves to weave in playfulness throughout all of her classes because there is so much joy in the freedom of yoga. Most of all, she encourages you to become a priority in your own life so that you can be the best version of yourself and make a positive impact in the world around you.
